june 1st, 2010: as if things couldn't get any worse, they did. my bad luck continues as the truck breaks down and i'm back to square one. last day at glendale elementary

may has been the worst month of my life and i'm glad it's over.

i used to drive the truck before i got my honda accord which is now flooded. i bought it from steven and my dad bought it from me, and then my mom used when her car got repossessed, and then after it got back to my dad, it broke down. after we got it up and running, things were great.i had a vehicle again and i didnt have to depend on other people to get to work and get around. a week and a half went by and the truck was running great.

then last wednesday night I was dropping off a friend in east nashville after skating until 3 in the morning and the clutch started sticking a bit. it got real loose. i wasnt too worried about it though. i dropped him off and had trouble getting in reverse. on the drive home when i shift the clutch starting stick to the floorboard a bit, at this point i just wanted to make it home. i came up to the stop sign a block from my house and put the truck in neutral, and when i put the clutch in, it stuck to the floor. i couldnt get it to pop back up. i had to reach down and grab it and pull it up. i tried shifting again, but the clutch stuck once again. i tried pressing the clutch and shifting but it wouldnt go into gear. i sat at the stop sign for 5 minutes, until a car pulled up behind me. i put it in neutral and let it coast down the road a bit. the car behind me wouldn't pass me so i ended up turning off onto a side street, which was a bad idea. the street had a dip in the middle. i didnt make it all the way up so i rolled back down. i tried pushing the truck up the hill but it was too steep and the truck was too heavy. so i tried pushing it backwards the way it came but i got to a point where it stopped. i sat in the truck for 10 minutes. it was 3:30 in the morning. too late to call any of my roommates to come and help me push it to the house.

i was about to push it into someone's yard and walk home when i had the idea to try to pop the clutch. i pushed the truck back up backwards and let it roll down and i shoved it into 1st gear and popped the clutch and it started going. i revved 3,000 r.p.m. at went 5 mph and went through a stop sign and pulled into my yard.

the truck has been sitting there ever since. i found out from my brother the clutch master cylinder went out. the part is under a hundred bucks but my labor will be 150 or more. i dont have the tools and i dont know how im going to get my truck anywhere to get it fixed. i got a ride to the half day at glendale on thursday.

in lighter news, friday was the last day at glendale elementary because they aren't open in the summer.

friday i awoke at 6 a.m. to the sound of my doorbell. my alarm didnt go off and i had to open the last day of the elementary. my coworker was there to pick me up. i threw on some clothes and grabbed my camera. i got to the school at 630 and opened the doors. another co worker came in and we started watching the kids start coming in. the previous day was pretty sad, some of my 4th graders told me they couldnt come on friday so that would be the last time i would ever see them. i got a picture from my birthday at work with all of my 4th graders.

mr sean's 25th birthday with 4th grade class

as the day went on, we took them outside, and played games and just had fun. i was supposed to get off at 3 but i couldnt find a ride home so i ended up having to stay until 545. one of my students came all the way to the school to give me a card which was really sweet. "mr. sean, don't tell anyone but you are the best 4th grade teacher ever." im going to miss these kids. i got the few that were left together for one last picture.

mr. sean's glendale 4th graders

it was sad to leave the elementary but it felt right at the same time. my 4th graders were leaving and so was i. after i got off work i rode jim's bike to my census meeting. my bike of course has 2 flat tires. after i got out of the census meeting i wrote the bike around east nashville going to different streets and ended up working until 8:15 that night. so all in all i worked around 14 hours.

the next few days i rode around working the census and cleaning up my room. i decided there isnt much i can do about the truck right now so i'm limited to a bike. i also have to decide if i am going to sell my car to a junkyard or try to get someone to buy it. its too stressful to try to sell my car that i had for almost 3 years for next to nothing.

i put in over 50 hours this week. im working so much so i dont have time to think, and so far it's working.

i'm currently reading albert camus's the fall.

stay tuned because up next: where i will be in 2 weeks.

may 24th,2010: how I lost my car on I-24 in the nashville flood (mini-katrina) may 1st, 2010, and the aftermath that followed.

it's been a month since the last post, and as you all can see the new website is not up. This has one of the craziest months of my life.
I have been dealing with a lot and unfortunately have not had time to do anything with the site. I am just now getting around to being able to post about it.
This is an extremely long post with tons of pictures.

Without further adieu, here is what happened.

On Saturday may 1st, a sequence of events occured that created a domino effect. I got a call that morning from the census bureau about a job that I had applied for 3 months prior. They said they would love for me to work for them asked if I would accept the position as an enumerator on NRFU assigments. It was a 6 week position and the pay was $17 an hour. Needless to say I accepted the position. My roommate jim came home around 1 and said that his car was shot. It was leaking oil in the morning, and he took it to a mechanic because it was making crazy sounds. He had to drive to murfreesboro that evening to eat with his brother and mom for his birthday. The mechanic told him his car was shot and he shouldn't drive it on any roads much less the interstate. So he asked me if I would take him. I was adament about it, as I only go to murfreesboro when I have to. But it was his brother's birthday so I gave in.

we left around 415, and by 430 pm, we were stuck in traffic on 24 between bell road and harding place headed towards murfreesboro when all 3 lanes of cars came to dead stop.

jim got out to smoke a cigarette and he noticed the river rising.

before

To the right of us the bridge started filling up with water.
Then the water came over the guard rail and spilled underneath our cars.
The barriers didn’t have any holes in them so the water just started rising because it had nowhere else to go.

pretty soon it was up to the bottom of the car.

I closed my doors and tried to figure out what to do. People started panicking and abandoning their cars. They had closed the exit before and after where we were so none of the cars could move.

We were trapped and the water level was rising.
I had my camera so I did the only thing I could think to do at that point, document it.

jim was on the phone with 911, and they put him on hold. i told jim there is nothing they can do for us now.
Pretty soon jim said that we needed to leave and head for the church in the distance.
I was in a state of shock. I thought I was dreaming. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I had to leave my car because it was going to be flooded.
With no other choice, I started grabbing everything out of my car that was valuable or perishable. I grabbed proof of insurance, registration, checks, ipod, gps, and tape adapter.
I closed my door and watched as the water seeped in and started soaking the carpet.

I realized my skateboard and some decks were in the back so I opened the trunk and grabbed those.
Jim had a backpack and we started shoving things into it, all of the paper and electronics.
He went over the wall and I got up on top and watched as people frantically tried to turn around, back up and go the other way. This was to no avail. There was nowhere to go.
I stood on top of the wall and took pictures.

The water was up above the headlights.
The cars looked like floating turtles.

I couldn’t believe my own eyes, my car was one of them.
I had a sinking feeling in my gut.
I only have liability insurance, what am I going to do about my car? i thought to myself.
I then remembered I had cd's on the floorboard. I put my wallet in my long sleeve pocket and took my camera with me and went back to the car.
The water was up to waist.

I waited over to the car and opened the door. The water slung it open and almost into the car beside me.
I got in the car and the water was above the steering wheel.

My pocket started vibrating.
My phone! I had forgotten that it was in my pocket underwater. I thought someone was calling me but when I got my phone out it was just vibrating and the lights were flashing.
It wouldn’t stop so I had to take the battery out.
My phone was now destroyed.
I put it on the dashboard and continued looking for stuff. I reached into the passenger side under the seat and pulled out 2 spools of cd's.
I took some pictures of the interior because I wouldn't have believed it otherwise.

I got out of the car and shut the door. There was no point in locking it.
I waited back over to the wall and the water was up over my waist.
I climbed the wall and watched as people were walking down the interstate to underneath an overpass.
There weren’t any cars in the opposite lane before but now some were making their way towards us.
I looked back over and a car started to float into another car. A man had to go to back to his car to get something.
I took one last look at my car and we started walking.

We made it to the bridge. Everyone was either on their cell phones talking or taking pictures.
I made my way up the wall under the bridge to the top. I saw a church in the distance and decided that would be a good place to try to get out of the rain.
I went back down to tell jim and then I told a group of people standing around. No one seemed to care.
As I was getting our stuff together a man in a pick up truck pulled up and said he would take people to the next exit.
This was our only chance for a ride so I told Jim we should do it.

We got in the back of the truck with about 10 other people.

As we were pulling away, we saw a house in the distance floating towards the interstate. It was right near where my car was. It hit something and stopped.

The man drove us to the bell road exit.
We thanked him as he let us off. We walked down the road, soaking wet and to a walgreens.
Inside we put our stuff down and went into the restroom looking for a hand dryer to dry my phone but there wasn’t one.
After coming back out Jim had gotten some towels from the store manager and we tried to dry off.
I went outside to look for another place and found a hardees. I went inside and spent 10 minutes at the hand dryer trying to dry my phone off. You could see the water inside so and it only started to fog so I gave up.

I walked back to walgreens and we stayed inside for a bit trying to figure out what to do. Jim made some phone calls but then he couldn’t get through. everyone else was trying to call out as well.
I went outside and took some pictures.

antioch pike and haywood lane were flooded and a car was in the middle and the water was above the windshield. I looked around and a kwik sak gas station was flooding, and so was everything else around. This area was cut off as well and the water level was still rising.

I talked to some people that lived around there. Everyone had come out of their houses to watch.
I found Jim and he had bought some supplies. He changed into some dry clothes.
Jim went back inside and bought a packaging slip and a marker and wrote EAST NASHVILLE on it for a sign for someone to pick us up.
We started walking back towards the interstate and came up to a police officer.
I told him my car was underwater on the interstate and he didn’t have a lot of information.
He called his sergeant and then told us not to go back down there because they weren’t going to be towing any cars out because the water was still coming over the barriers.

"What about my car?" I was thinking to myself. I asked him if he knew what they were going to do with the cars. He said he didn’t know but told us to watch the news because they were probably broadcast where to pick up the cars after they tow them. He said the interstate would be closed for a while.

We thanked him and walked off.
As we were waking Jim held up the sign.
Literally a minute later, the 2nd vehicle that passed us pulled over.
Are you serious I thought? It was a truck and the guy told us he was going to east Nashville.
We hopped into the bed of the truck, it was still raining but a ride is a ride.
He took us all the way down to nolensville road and let 2 people out at an arby's. Then we were able to get in.
It was a father, a son and daughter. The son was in high school, and the daughter in grad school at mtsu. She too had lost her car on I-24 just like us. They took us all the way to our house. They all lived in east nashville so it worked out.
We thanked them and hopped out.
After getting inside, I showed seth the pictures. He said he wished he had gone along with us.
All I could think was that if it hadn’t been my car, it would have been jim’s.

Wrong place wrong time

this is a screen shot i took from the video below, i circled my car

This is video I found that aired. Some of my friends saw it live, and some said they recognized my car.

The next day I woke up to rain, and more rain.
I walked into my living room entrance and heard dripping.
It was coming from my chimney.
It turns out the water came in through the chimney and collected on the wood until it caved. The water spilled all over the hardwood floor, so I had to put several bowls down to catch the water.
I spent the entire day looking outside and monitoring the house.
Seth, jim and I went downtown to pick up seth’s check in west end.
We crossed over the Cumberland and noticed that it had flooded on both sides.

Driving through the city was really strange, because 1st and 2nd avenue had flooded.

I started my 3rd job working for the census bureau as an enumerator that Monday. I got a ride to my first day of training on Monday and no one showed up. I had to get a ride home from someone at the training.

I came home and decided to play drums. I walked down into the basement and was immediately hit in the face with the odor of dampness.

I turned on the lights and pulled up the carpet. Water had come in and soaked the carpet and stopped a foot away from my friend’s amp and 3 feet from my drum set.

I pulled up the carpet to find the water filled almost half of the basement.

The water also caused part of the dirt wall to cave in.

I spent about 8 hours throughout the day shoveling mud and drying out the carpets in the sun and overall cleaning the basement out. It had to be done.

Since my phone got soaked halfway up the screen, I developed a method to dry it out. I put it in a pot of rice on the stove on low. Alternating this for several hours at a time, after 4 days my phone was almost dried up. The last 2 days I had it in the tub of rice alone.
I crossed my fingers and turned it on, and it worked. The battery doesn’t last long at all but I was just happy to have a phone again.
My old truck was at my dad’s house but it had a flat tire and wouldn’t start. This was my only option for a vehicle.

All week I tried to find my car. I called all kinds of places trying to find it.
I had some people at my job tell me that they heard things on the radio about paying towing and storage fees. But I couldn’t figure out where they had towed me car. My car was one of 70 that got flooded on the interstate that day.
My brother wrote a letter to Bart Gordon about my car situation and got a reply back.
My dad did some research and called several places and got a number for me. On Friday, I got off work a little early, and I called west Nashville towing. They had 2 honda accords. I gave them my license plate number and they told me they had it.

I was so relieved when I got off the phone. It took 6 days to find my car, and each day the fees were stacking up.
I had to find a ride to the towing place.
My friend sally got off work and offered to give me a ride.
I called AAA to see if they could tow my car back to my house. They said there was a 3-hour delay. So we went to the vegan restaurant wild cow and hung out there.

The technician called and said he was close. We left and got to the towing place. The events that unfolded are funny now but at the time they were stressful and annoying.

I walked into the office. The door was heavy and had a bell on it. As I walked in, there were tall ceilings. There was one person in front of me. It was a girl who was trying to get her car back. I stood in line. The woman in the office was trapped in a glass cube. There were some holes at the bottom of it near a small hole to put money or a credit card.

The woman behind the desk could most aptly be described as a sloth. Her movements were all in slow motion. She took her time and made sure to talk to whoever came in the room, usually about nothing.
While I was standing in line, the AAA guy called and said that he didn’t have much time because he had another car to pick up. I told him I was in line.
I finally got up to the window and started talking to the lady.
Hello, I'm here to pick up my car.”
“What?”
I have a 98 honda accord”
“Sweetie, I can’t understand you.”
The window speaker box was at the counter level so I had to bend down and talk directly into it.
I’m here to get my car.”
“I’m going to need to see some proof of ownership of the vehicle.”
Damn I thought to myself. I left all of the paperwork at home!
”I might have something in the car. Do you know where I can find it?”
She pointed to the back door and sally and I went out there. We split up.
After a minute, I found my car. I almost didn’t recognize it.
I walked up to it, and hadn’t seen my car in almost a week. It was sad to see it.

I walked around and opened the driver’s door and was immediately hit with an unbearable stench. It made me sick.
I had rolled down the window right before I abandoned my car to let the water get out and also to help with the smell. Well all of the debris, sticks, rocks; etc all came in through that part of the window and got deposited into my drivers seat.

I couldn’t believe this was my car. I had to prove that the car was mine so I started looking through looking for something, anything. But I had remembered to take all of the important papers out of my glove box. I opened it anyway and reached in the back. I found a spool of cd’s and attached to the bottom was an expired insurance paper.
It had my VIN number and my name on it! I ran back to the office with it, so relieved that I could prove it was my car and get it towed out of there.
I came back and there were 2 people in front of me. I had to wait for them to be finished.
The AAA guy called me again and said that he didn’t have much time left. I apologized but told him I was almost finished.
When I finally got to the window, I gave her the paper and she looked at it for a while.
She then asked if I wanted to pay with cash or a credit card.
“How much is it?” I asked
“$125 dollars. We aren’t charging the $20 per day storage fees since a lot of people couldn’t locate their vehicles. “
Although I didn’t agree with them charging period, I was relieved because I was expecting to pay 240 dollars.
Thank You I told her. Then I walked out and said goodbye to sally and we went to find my car in the back.
He loaded up my car and we talked on the way back to my house about all of the damage the flood causes. 1.5 billion dollars worth, in structural damages alone not including monetary value of items in people’s homes.

He told me not to go in my car without gloves or a mask on. I hadn’t thought about it but he said the water was full of sewage, dead animals, bacteria and diseases.

I got my car towed back to my house and put in the front yard.

I thanked the guy and went inside.
The next day I went outside and got the first good look at my car since I abandoned it a week ago.

The back bumper was slightly off and there were marks as if it had been pushed into another car. The gas door was bent and the front left tire was almost flat. But that was only the outside.

Inside, I couldn’t believe my eyes. As my roommate joe said, it looked like I drove my car was driven into a swamp, and left it there for 5 years.
The entire inside was coated in an inch of sewage and mud. It was cracked and looked like the salt lake. Sticks and debris were everywhere.

On the inside you could where the water level. The water was above the visors.

The floors were still soaked and in the backseat you could see an inch of water.

I opened the trunk and the smell punched me in the face. I gagged.
The trunk was sealed with sewage water for a week and I unleashed it.

I had to leave a lot of things in my car because I couldn’t take them.
CD’s, books, jumper cables, etc.

I popped the hood to find a rusted engine, corroded battery terminals.

I opened all of the doors and everything to try to air it out.
But after looking at it that day, I realized that I would never get my car running again.
It was done, a giant piece of useless plastic and metal.
That Sunday, my dad came up from Murfreesboro and looked at my car.
It was mother’s day so we met my mom and went out to eat. Then my dad drove me back to Murfreesboro and he had gotten the truck running again so I got to pick it up. It was nice to drive it again, old memories.
Steven was in town so I drove over to see him. His brother’s girlfriend said she saw me on the news, and I have heard this from several different people.

I sent some of these pictures to tv stations and newspapers.

The murfreesboro post used some of them and had an article.

http://www.murfreesboropost.com/mod/ophoto/index.php?albumid=363

The editor wrote this to me:

“Thanks for the photos. They are great.

Here's what one of our readers said:

"It’s one heck of a journalistic story-telling effort and photo...way to go photographer..."

Michelle Willard
Murfreesboro Post Editor

I filed a claim for my car with FEMA, and the next day I got a phone call from an inspector.
Monday they opened my elementary school so I went back to working 2 jobs.
Tuesday the inspector came by. She was really nice. She had to look at the whole house for structural damage. When I showed her my car, she seemed amazed. She took pictures of it, and then said, “well I hope we can help you out.”
”I do too I told her. Anything is better than nothing.”
She said I would hear from FEMA within 10-14 days and left.

As far as my car goes, I will have to sell the parts that are salvageable and sell the body to a junkyard or sell it all as one. i dont know yet.

I just about to break 210,000 miles on it, and I was getting the best gas mileage.

I am just glad I have the truck to drive around or I wouldn’t be able to work or do anything.

Well that is where I have been and what happened.

stay tuned, up next you will find out where i will be this summer...

april 18th,2010: hot damn i'm back! new site soon, dolcim in studio april 16th, 17th, 18th, my 25th birthday in 2 days

hello? hello? yes im here, alive and kicking. long time no post, I know. 4 months actually. sorry about that. i have been trying to make this post for several days now but the hosting program i used to use expired, so i had to get a new one. i actually just got off the phone with my hosting provider, and it took almost an hour to get everything situated for this new post alone.

so i blew it. I was supposed to launch the new seanconley.net site in january. However building the new website and converting the old one has proven to be a much more arduous task than I had previously expected. From building the new pages with a new template to deciding what content and information I wasnted to keep from the old one, it has been overwhelming to say the least. This is not a good enough excuse I know but it's all i've got. That and I've just been living life more than just writing about it. But I have been working on it slowly. The problem was I didnt want to make any posts until I had the new website ready to go. But it's taking a while so I thought I would write something if anything so those of you that still come here don't think this website is dead. So I am giving you all a sneak peak of the new site. here is a screen shot of it in progress and that's all you get for now. just be patient.

in dolcim news, we are in the studio recording our 2nd full-length album this weekend april 16th, 17th, and 18th with jason dietz at twin oak productions. he has recorded all of the dolcim material as well as the last cease record and e.p. he is a good friend of ours and does amazing work. here is a shot from tracking songs yesterday.

we got all of justins drums tracked, i finished almost all of my bass tracks, and matt already started working on lead parts. vocals and the rest of the lead guitar are next, then mixing and mastering. more dolcim news coming soon.

in other news, my 25th birthday is coming up in a few days, tuesday april 20th to be exact. i will be a quarter of a century old, interesting.

I will leave the new at that and try to keep this post short. But don't worry, I haven't forgotten about all of you out in the interwebs. Everything will be revealed soon. I will have posts about where I have been and what I have been doing over these last 4 months.

i'm heading to murfreesboro to see my family for a pre-birthday lunch, and then back to the studio.

as always, stay tuned...

december 31st, 2009: last day of 2009, merry late christmas, dolcim "guillotine ride" cassette tape! colorado or bust, new website in 2010, happy birthday seth

let me start by apologizing for the lack of a christmas post or any post for that matter. i haven't had the internet at my house for a while. until last night, i hadn't checked my email since i was in new orleans. it magically started working and so i decided to do the last post of the year.

as we wrap up this last day of 2009, I wanted to say happy late christmas to everyone. i got home from the 9 and 1/2 hour drive to new orleans around 3 a.m. and had to get up and drive to murfreesboro to spend christmas with my family.

i got everyone gifts from new orleans. for christmas i got socks and money, both of which i needed. my brother got me the coolest gift ever.

gleaming the cube on DVD! it has been out of print since 1999. i only had a VHS version copied off of tv with weather alerts at the bottom of the screen. thanks ryan.

dolcim "guillotine ride" cassette tape official release on sleepinghouse records

i said the cassette would be out in december 2009, but I haven't had the internet. the tapes came in the mail a little while ago and now the dolcim "guillotine ride" cassette is officially out and for sale on sleepinghouse records. it also available on forever escaping boredom and will be available on utarid tapes in malaysia very soon.

limited to 50 copies. you can order these now here.

at approximately 5 a.m. on the 1st day of 2010 I will be boarding a plane for denver, colorado. i will be dropped off at the airport after midnight and hang out there by myself for a couple of hours, which is fine. i am used to hanging out in airports. i will be spending the first part of the new year somewhere else once again. hopefully there won't be too much snow on the ground and we can film some skateboarding. i will be gone until around the 7th so there won't be a post for a week.

i know i have been talking about it for the last few months but after I get back from colorado I will be completely redoing this website.

so this is the last post you will see that looks like this. there will be an archives section with all of the posts from the website from the beginning.

and lastly, happy birthday to my good friend seth who turns 25 today. have a good one man.

seth, circa sometime around 2003 when i used to shoot film

happy new year 2010 everyone. be safe and if you drink don't drive.

december 22nd, 2009: new orleans or bust!

that's right. by the time you are reading this, I am driving the 9 and 1/2 hours to new orleans, louisiana, where I have never been before. I am visiting some of my swedish friends that are down there right now.

but don't worry, i'll be home for christmas.

updates soon, and christmas post!

december 12th, 2009: studio, radio interview, Atlanta or bust/broken phone, dolcim/raein shows, swine flu?, denver colorado, legendary skateboards, etc.

a lot has happened in these past 2 weeks, i will try to recap:

dolcim

dolcim recorded 3 songs in the studio 2 weekends ago. they are in the final mixing stages. we are trying to get them finished before the new year.

the radio interview was pretty fun, we had some random calls that came in, gene wilder being one of them and a laserdisc expert being the other. i played men at work "land down under" and the kids in the hall theme song by shadowy men on a shadowy planet as well as juno. and as always, we talked about the spice girls.

that following tuesday, I picked up roy and met up with matt and justin and we headed to Atlanta. It rained the whole way, what a miserable drive. the sunset was pretty.

We pulled up to the venue and parked. It rained consistently while we unloaded gear. I talked to the guys in raein a bit. I also talked to zack and matt from the nationale, it was good to see them. we went on a beer run and almost got lost in downtown Atlanta but found the place. They had chips called gator taters.
By the time we got back to the venue we had missed the first band, and it was time for us to play. Their wasn’t another mic stand, so the promoter made one out of a broom stick and an orange parking cone, which was rad. It reminded me of the show in mol, Belgium.
While playing I thrashed around and ended up stepping on my phone, and since it was already halfway broken, i broke it into 2 pieces. So I went without a phone for the next few days.

before
after

But other than that, we played decent.
Raein went on next and played well.

It was great to see alessio and Ricardo. I hadn't seen them since I was living in malmo, Sweden in july 2007 when they came with neil on impression.
After the show, we said our goodbyes and matt drove the 4 hours back into the night.
After taking roy back to his house I got home somewhere around 430 a.m. The next day after I got off work I had to go to the venue to unload gear and do it all over again.
The show was awesome.
Shrines went on first, and sounded impressive for their 2nd show.

Karoshi went on next and played the best set Ive ever seen them play.

Gnarwhal went on and got the crowd going.

Raein followed and destroyed the place in front of a very large crowd of people.

We played last, around midnight. thanks to josh for these pictures.

you can see a ton more pictures from these bands on my sister photography website digital nashville.

It was a great show, and after loading up I went back over to my old apartment where raein was staying with my old roommate chris.
The next morning I met them for breakfast at bongo javas

and we got a picture together before they left town.

other news

After this, I had a stroke of bad luck. I came down with the flu Saturday, and I have been in bed ever since.I slept for 20 hours on and off through Sunday, and another 18 hours through Monday. I was so weak on Monday I couldn’t get out of bed. so my friend chris came by with some grapefruit juice, vegan soups and some pills. He made me some soup and it was then I realized why I couldn’t get out of bed. I hadnt eaten in days so I lost all my strength, and I didn’t have any energy to get up. Ive been sleeping all the time, and taking medicine here and there. Im on my way back up now, hopefully.
In other news, I got new shoes. emerica francis. just this fall they released a synthetic colorway so i could finally get them. ive been wanting them for a couple of years.

Also, I ordered my one way ticket to Denver, Colorado to visit my friend Joe. I will be there from January 1st-7th. Then me and Joe are splitting up the 20 hour drive back, probably making some stops in some cool cities on the way back. I also plan on visiting my friends doug and ben that live in boulder.   While in denver, I am going to be filming some skateboarding for me and joe's parts. And speaking of skateboarding, that’s what I have been doing nonstop lately. My friends started a board company, called legendary skateboards. the stickers came in the mail today. be on the lookout for legendary in the future, you will start to see the stickers around.

I am spearheading the media side of legendary. I have been filming a video for it over the past few months that will be coming out in the future. I actually skate everyday now, which is just as much as when I first started skating 10 years ago. it's rad.

Well that’s all for now.

november 26th, 2009: happy "don't eat turkey" day vegan style, dolcim radio interview november 28th 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on 88.3

happy don't eat turkey day everyone!

since i am vegan, and have been since the european tour, this thanksgiving will be especially hard. mashed potatoes, buttered rolls, sweet potatoes, pasta salads, desserts, anything with dairy is all out. so i have decided to make a rice, tofu and vegetable curry in case there isn't much for me to eat.

dolcim radio interview saturday november 28th, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on 88.3

dolcim will be on their 2nd radio show this weekend on the urusei punk rock show hosted by our friend thomas on saturday november 28th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. we will be talking about the upcoming shows with raein, our upcoming splits, maybe the new album, but mostly spice girls and candlebox like the last interview. so if you are in murfreesboro, tune in to 88.3 wmts from 10-12 and listen to us talk about nothing. if you can't catch it, like always it will be recorded and we will do something with it later.

dolcim will also finally going to be in the studio this friday and saturday to record new songs for the splits. so i will be having a really busy weekend.

huge update on sleepinghouse records, so check it out!

currently watching ghostbusters 1 and 2

that's all for now. be safe if you are traveling.

november 19th, 2009: tour journal (last) POST 8 up now!, dolcim news, kafka news, CMAR DVD, JOB?, the fantastic mr. fox

sorry for the lack of posts and also the lack of content. i have been insanely busy as usual. I have also been saving everything to do a large update when I launch the new site soon.

let's get down to business:

dolcim news

Post 8, the last post of the dolcim european tour journal is up now in the tour section! this last post includes the last show in munster with resurrectionists and hammers, goodbyes, and our trip home. since it is the final post, the tour journal is now finished and can be read in its entirety, so if you haven't read it or have been keeping up with it, check it out now!

dolcim will be going into the studio this weekend to record the songs for the hammers split. we also have 3 shows coming up in december, 2 being out of town.

December 2nd in Atlanta at ps warehouse with i create and raein (from italy)
December 3rd at little hamilton with raein

December 18th in Knoxville with burial at longbranch saloon

thats right, we will be playing our first out of state show next month. its going to be awesome to play 2 shows with the legendary raein.

also, the dolcim "guillotine ride" tape will be ordered soon. look for a december release. check sleepinghouse records and forever escaping boredom for more information.

kafka on the shore news

a music video for a song off of "content to drift" is almost finished and will be premiering here, the sleepinghouse records page, as well as the myspace site in the near future, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

CMAR DVD

the CMAR DVD has been finished for several weeks now. i sent the master DVD off to react with protest so lars could put together the european DVD. ryan lewis is doing the artwork for the u.s.a. covers, which will be finished soon as well. more information and how to order on sleepinghouse records

in other news

after being unemployed for over 6 months, getting on food stamps, and being denied unemployment, I had a job interview last friday. It went so well they hired me on the spot. I started this past tuesday. I am now a 4th grade after school teacher at Glendale Elementary School in Oak Hill. Glendale is a magnet Spanish Immersion school, so I will belearning some spanish. You can listen to an NPR story about it here:
It is also very hard to get into, so I feel honored to be accepted as one of the staff. They have an E.S.P. program, very similar to what I used to do several years ago. I am very excited to finally have a job, and to also be working with kids again. it feels very natural for me to teach.

and finally, thanksgiving weekend i am going to the midnight premiere of wes anderson's new film, "the fantastic mr. fox" which is based on the childhood book by roald dahl. you should go see it when it comes out near you.

that's all for now.

october 14th, 2009: POST 7 , "where the wild things are" homage

Hello everyone. Post 7 of the tour journal is now up in the tour section! It covers the 3 days of the Cry Me A River Festival. it took me long enough to finish it huh? I know, I know, but quit your whining and go check it out, some of you are probably in the background of the pictures somewhere.

Anyway, moving right along. Since "where the wild things are" comes out in 2 days, (this Friday October 16th!) I thought I would pay tribute by dressing up the site and making this entry all about the film. As you may already have noticed, I made a banner for the site. Also, i am taking some snippets from a "roundtable" interview in Newsweek with Maurice Sendak, 81 (the author) Spike Jonze (director) and Dave Eggers (screenwriter). I took bits and pieces of the interview, basically what struck me. I would recommending reading the interview in its entirety here.

A Talk With "Wild Things" Creators

What do you say to parents who think theWild Things film may be too scary?
Sendak: I would tell them to go to hell. That's a question I will not tolerate.

Because kids can handle it?
Sendak: If they can't handle it, go home. Or wet your pants. Do whatever you like. But it's not a question that can be answered.

Do you think Disney is bad for children?
Sendak: I think it's terrible.

Jonze: It's interesting because at this point it's being talked about. I met some guy on the subway the other day—I was waiting on the subway platform for the F train the other day, and this guy comes up to me who's roughly my age, and he said, "Is the F train running today? God, I've been waiting here forever, and I've got to get down to this record store. It's the only used-CD store in town." And he was very friendly, nice guy, so I was talking to him about used-CD stores, then the guy was like, "You know what movie I can't wait to see is "Where the Wild Things Are." And I was looking at him, trying to see—is he just messing with me now? Does he know that I made this? Or is this sincere? And so I just listened to him talk for a minute, and I said, "What made you say that?" And he said, "Oh, because I used to skate a lot, and it made me think, the director's a skateboarder, and I like his stuff," and I was like, "Uh-huh." And so I'm still waiting to see, is he messing with me? And he keeps talking about the movie, and how he's heard about it, and he's like, "The movie's amazing." And I asked if he'd seen it, and he was like, "No, but I saw the trailer. I know it's controversial—they said it's controversial. I think something really crazy happens at the end." [Laughter] And at this point, I'm still trying to figure out if he's messing with me, so I'm like, "Are you f--king with me?" "No, no, they said it's controversial," and then he's going on, and he's telling me how the director made all these music videos, he made skate videos, and I finally realize that he is just genuinely being sincere, and this conversation's gone on for 10 minutes, and I finally say, "I'm Spike, I'm the director," and he just looked at me for a minute and he got really sincere and he's like, "Oh, so why is it controversial?" [Laughter]

Spike, did you have fights like that when you were making this film? With the studio, not with Maurice.
Jonze: Yeah. The big disagreement is that they thought I was making a children's film and I thought I was making a film about childhood, and so, along the way ... I mean, I think it's a film—I want children to see it, and it's not like I made it not for children, and it'll be on the video shelf under CHILDREN'S, but I didn't come at it that way. I came at it from the inside out as opposed to the outside in. In the end, though, the studio let us make the movie we wanted to make.

There’s something in that, though—danger and rebellion are the things that are thrilling to you when you’re a kid.
Sendak: Kids are barbaric. They really have to be. They don’t know what it is to be polite or nice. There is a toughness to being a child. Childhood is a very tough time. I always had a deep respect for children and how they solve complex problems by themselves.

I’m interested in the distinction between stories that are “for children” versus stories that are “about childhood.” Maurice’s work was about childhood but also entertained children. Will the film resonate with children the way it’s already resonating with adults?
Eggers: I think it depends on the kid. Spike and Maurice and I, the boys that we were, absolutely respond to this movie, and feel this vicarious thrill. If we had our druthers, that’s where we would be, on this island with these creatures you could order around and throw rocks and bum through the woods and howl. But I think that there’s always going to be the kids that don’t respond to that kind of thing. Maybe it’s the difference between indoor cats and outdoor cats.
Jonze: Maurice talks a lot about how hard childhood can be. But he was the one from the beginning who was saying, “Make sure you don’t just represent the fear and anxiety of childhood. Make sure you represent the joy and excitement and-”
Sendak: Fun.
Jonze: “And fun and mischievousness and power and play.” And as much as he will talk the talk of that side of childhood, he is an adamant protector of the inner life, the inner desire for joy that children have. And I think we wanted to represent both sides of that.

Great stuff. To learn more about the film, be sure to check out weloveyouso.com
We Love You So
is a blog site that Spike Jonze and his friend Dallas created that basically deals with anything related to "Where the Wild Things Are." It covers interviews with Maurice Sendak, updates on the films progress, soundtrack, the first billboard signs to go up in Los Angeles, wtwta clothing lines, action figures, artwork, wtwta themed art shows, contests etc. And speaking of contests, we love you so teamed up with spike over at crailtap and they held a "where the wild things are" contest. The contest was called "where the wild things ought to be." In the contest, you had to make an image with max or the wild things characters and add them to a scene that needed some "wilding up." As some of you know, I took part in this contest. I emailed some of the images to you guys so you could help me ultimately decide which one to submit. The vote wasn't unamious, but this is the image I submitted for this contest:

as the story behind the picture goes, i was walking around paris 2
years ago killing time before my band played a show, and i got lost.
i turned a corner and i saw this lady asleep with a bucket of kfc
near her. i found her like that, with one shoe off. so i grabbed my
camera and took her picture. she never moved
.

Of course I didn't win, but it was amazing to be a part of something creative that related to the film. check out the other entries here. The winner received the whole collection of the special edition girl decks with each of the charaters from the film on them. awesome.

as you may have already noticed, I can't wait for this film to come out. It's my most anticpated film of the past 3 years. So I dont care what you are doing friday october 16th, if you have work, call in sick, if you dont have a car, hitch hike. If you have plans, cancel them. No excuses. Go and see "Where The Wild Things Are" in the theater. That's where I will be, and if you want to join me, you know how to get a hold of me. I have been waiting for this film to come out for over 3 years now, and I will not miss it.

support this film in anyway possible.

if you have HBO, watch the documentary "Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak" tonight wednesday october 14th at 7 p.m. i dont have HBO so someone please tape it for me. danke.

Stay tuned for more updates, and changes in the site in the not so distant future...

october 9th, 2009: updates, tour section, news

alright, so the website is slowly getting back into shape.
i have added
a tour section to the page so I could put the page back together and simultaneously update the front page as well as put up the last 2 posts from the tour journal. so check that out.

also i have created a sister photography website to house the digital pictures from shows. over the past year i have been shooting nashville shows, but more recently, within the last few months i have been shooting a lot of shows at little hamilton collective. therefore, i felt the need to document it. so i made a website so i can give bands pictures from their shows and also provide a community place where people can see pictures from underground shows in nashville. so here it is: digital nashville

so I have exciting news. the website will have a huge overhaul very soon. I have decided to move away from my caveman style website and look into other options for the layout. i have been very stubborn about everything on here having to be done by me. The website will have a whole new look and all i can say is that you guys should like it. soon enough there will be a better way to look at photographs on the website, so for all of you out there that asked me to make the pictures bigger, your wish will finally be granted.

so yeah, it's october already. this last month just flew by. i filed for unemployment last week. i had to. It is odd to me that even though I still don't have a job I have been too busy to be able to finish the tour journal and keep my sites updated. but i will get to it.

dolcim DID NOT go into the studio this past friday and saturday. there was a lack of communication between my bandmates. But we will be going in late november to record songs for the upcoming split 7" with our friends Hammers from the UK. we played some shows with Hammers and they are all awesome dudes so this split should be rad.

I have finished writing Post 7: CMAR and as soon as I get the pictures up for it, I will post it in the tour section of the website.

also, there has been a lot that has happened in the past 3 months of my life that i have not been able to write about on the website. i have kept a mental note and once the new website is up and running i will bring everyone up to speed.

so enjoy the way the page looks now and stay tuned for the NEW seanconley.net

september 14th, 2009: updates, apologies, and explanations

So i have to start off again by apologizing. Long story. The short version is that I have been hosting off of a server that I wasn't supposed to for a long ime, and well, they finally found out and kicked me off of it. The funny thing is that they didn't take my site down, they just wouldn't let me update and upload new information to it, hence why the site hasn't had an update since early july. I was trying to decide whether or not I was going to continue the site, or if I was just going to give up and quit. Then I thought of those of you guys who I met in europe along the tour, who said you were following the tour journal, or that you liked the journal. So thanks to you guys, I have decided to finish what I started.

Therefore i bought hosting space, and a domain.
the site is now seanconley.net, but seanconley.tk will be forwarded to this address, so either one will work. I will pick up where I left off with the tour journal and finish it up, and then slowly update whats been going on over the past 2 months.

WHOA, this is where the last post was of the website before the tour journal, MADNESS. check the tour journal to fill in the gaps.

may 11th, 2009: i want popsicles

i've been going to a lot of graduations lately. my brother ryan graduated on saturday.

my wide angle lens came in the mail, and even though it is not exactly what I expected, its not too bad.

i broke my board a couple of days ago and have had to stop skateboarding for the time being because i don't have insurance.

in dolcim news, our t-shirts came in!!!! we sold some of them at the show.

also, the show last night went really well. (more pictures coming soon.) we autographed some shirts, which was weird.

in kafka news, the new artwork will be coming in the mail today hopefully. oh i didn't go over that. i got the tapes in the mail and the artwork was too dark (hence the lack of pictures.) so the tape company is sending me the artwork separately. it will barely make it here before tour. but since the tapes were shrink wrapped, i had to cut the bottom of the shrink wrap to fit the new artwork into the tape and tape it back up. each tape will come with a sticker included. should be awesome. i have sold several pre-order copies so far. i am sending out quite a few tomorrow. but I am going to have to hold off on the online orders because I obviously won't be able to ship them while i am in europe. zac from open water records will be handling the u.s. orders. you can order tapes from his webstore here . i will be selling the copies on tour with me so bring some extra dough to the shows.

the kafka stickers came in the mail!

these last few days are going to be insane.

the final countdown...

-we leave for tour in 2 days...

dolcim tour diary in 2 days

damn!

currently packing, running around trying to get everything situated before i leave.

the site will start undergoing changes soon...

may 9th, 2009: "content to drift" full-length cassette release!!!!!

finally! the kafka tapes came in the mail today and are now available on sleepinghouse records. soon you will be able to order directly from the sleepinghouse records page!

last dolcim show in the united states for the next few months tonight at wallstreet at 10:00 p.m.!!!!!!

2 countdowns off the list...

may 7th, 2009: i am overdressed

well, as you may or may not have noticed, dot tk has been down the past 2 days. its the first time i have had a issue with the domain and not the server. anyway its back up now.

so seanconley.tk is now 1 years old! yay! and to celebrate, i didn't do anything. i haven't much time to do much of anything really. its crazy, since i dont have a job anymore i have been just as busy. most of my time has been spent dealing with this court stuff. my uncle gave me the number to this guy in greensboro. i called him and he was a pretty cool guy. he is going to get my wreckless driving knocked down to a non moving offence, that's the good news. the bad news is that it's going to cost me about 500 dollars, which i am thoroughly pissed about, especially for a 1st offense. government bastards. on top of that, i have to do an online driving school course, which is what I have been doing for the past 2 days. i started it wednesday and finished it yesterday, it took me about 8 and 1/2 hours and cost 35 bucks. bullshit.

in other less depressing news, the graduation party was fun, i felt lame putting up banners and stuff and for a post-graduation party to begin with, but for the most part it was for my brother so that was fine. my brother graduates this saturday may 9th! way to go bro! anyway, here are some pictures from the get together. some people that i thought would come didn't, and some that i didn't think would did. but either way, i hadnt seen some of these people in a good while.

chelsea made some awesome cupcakes. my uncles, cousins, grandmother, and mom came out and some of my homies as well.
some hula hooping went down, including my dad trying it.
rick and i shared a moment.
my friend lindsey brought me some balloons, including a hannah montana blow up guitar and harry potter, which we let off into the sky.
my grandmother came down from tullahoma. my old neighborhood friend jonathan came with his friend thomas.
i got a hold of the hanna montanacaster while my cousin ted and his daughter lacey hung out.
rick wrote some encouraging words, and there was tetherball.

in kafka news, i jumped the gun, the tapes did not come in on monday. sorry. i did however get an email today with a tracking number, so i can confirm that the tapes will be here on saturday. so content to drift will be released may 9th. cross out may 4th on your calendars and put may 9th. i apologize to the pre-orders. the updated countdown will still continue. in related news, the stickers will be arriving very soon...

in dolcim news, we are playing our record release show with tony danza tapdance extravaganza and under the earth this saturday. we will be playing 2 brand new songs, that aren't recorded or anything so come see us before we leave for europe! also, the shirts should be arriving soon.

at about 6 o'clock today, i set up my drums for the first time since february. i played for about 20 minutes, and was making spaghetti in the kitchen when i heard a knock on the backdoor. i walked into the den to find an officer of the law standing there. apparently the neighbors that had just moved in next door 2 months ago called the cops because of my drums. he was a nice guy, and told me to do some soundproofing or something. i told him i was leaving for europe next week and that i had been playing drums in this room for over 8 years and never had any trouble. i even played in the front yard several months ago. apparently there isn't a noise ordinance anymore? i thought it was 9 or something. he said he wouldn't write me a citation. no shit. it was lame, and needless to say i won't be playing drums in this house anymore. i havent even been home for a week yet.

the countdowns are almost over:

-content to drift comes out in 2 days.

dolcim record release / european tour kick off show in 2 days

april 29th, 2009: happy songs for happy people

i went 90 almost the entire way and made the 10 hour drive in 7 hours and 45 minutes. on top of that, i got 500 miles on 1 tank of gas. i almost made the entire drive without having to fill up! i arrived in spring lake and walked up the stairs and steven had brody waiting at the top for me. "uncle sean" is here! it was nice meeting brody. steven had to work the next couple of days so i spent most of the time hanging out with sandy and brody and finishing up the artwork for the tapes. since there wasn't alot to do in spring lake, we mostly just hung out at the house. it was nice just relaxing for a few days.

the smalleys and uncle sean

on friday we dropped brody off at the babysitters and headed an hour and a half to carrboro, near chapel hill. we got there as the twilight sad was ending their set. cat's cradle is a cool venue and we walked around as mogwai set up. we tried to get close but there were several hundred people there so it made it difficult. it was good to see mogwai again, it had been about 3 years. i really love this band, and they have had quite an influence on kafka on the shore. anyway, they played songs off of their first album ten rapid, and steven and my favorite song "hunted by a freak." they also played songs off of their new album and all of their other albums as well. they left the stage and came back with 2 more songs as an encore, including "my father, my king."

after the show, steven got a set list and we waited around outside for the guys to come out. we talked to stuart and dominic, and i told them that steven and i had seen them back in 2006 in nashville. and i told them my band was touring europe and even playing glasgow. they said they would try to come to the show if they were in town but not to get mad at them if they couldn't make it. haha. i got a picture taken with them and was honored to have spoken with them. they signed our posters we bought and then someone off the tour bus got a soccer ball and they played a game right there in the parking lot as we left. on the way home steven got pulled over for going 53 in a 35, wreckless driving, but the officer let him go. all in all it was a really good night.

me and mogwai
carrboro, NC april 24th, 2009

the next morning was a different story. i left a bag of shirts that i gave brody and we took some pictures. i left spring lake saturday a lot later than i had anticipated and was speeding back to hopefully make it in less than 8 hours. well, while driving through greensboro in a little county called "guilford," the speed limit went from 55 to 65 and then back to 55 again. the state trooper waited until i had just entered the 55 zone to pull me over. " license. i clocked you at 77 a couple miles back." he took my license and walked off. 77 in a 55, which is wreckless driving. the state trooper came back and handed me a piece of paper. "your court date is june 19th. have a nice day" and walked off. the piece of paper did not have a fine price, a number or any other information that would be helpful it did read "if you fail to appear, you may be arrested and your driver's license will be revoked." the first thing i thought to myself was "im going to be in lyon, france on that day, then next, i'm 8 hours away from tennessee, why a court date, why not a fine?" i found out today after calling numerous numbers and places that this is not a ticket and cannot be paid. i must be present for the court date or they will issue a warrant for my arrest. my 1st speeding violation, at age 24, is a citation and a court date. i now have to hire an attorney to represent me 8 hours away while im in europe, which will cost several hundred dollars I am sure. yeah i was speeding, and im okay with paying a fine, because in the end that is all the state wants. but now i have to go through all of the hassle of finding and attorney and doing all of the legal bullshit involved. thanks north carolina!

after getting my citation, i had to drive the speed limit the whole way home, which took the entire 10 hours. it was depressing. i made it to nashville right around midnight and walked into springwater right as hour of owls (bgkf members) were playing their 2nd show as a band. i didn't know how long they had been playing but i took some pictures.

it was great to see them play. i found out later that night that this was their last show ever, as kyle is continuing his solo project ak dub. check out "chris mas." and chris has a project as well, nightmare cats. it was good to see the guys as i hadn't seen them since i was in high school, when they were bike gang knife fight:

bgkf bgkf color

in dolcim news: here is the flyer for the may 9th show. also, we ordered our shirts!!!!! 60 of them, all different colors. they will be coming in right before we leave for tour, we cut it close ordereding them so late. justin and i put these flyers up over town yesterday.

in kafka news, there is a ton! i ordered stickers yesterday, and they should come in right before tour as well. the MOST important news, i sent off the masters and artwork to be put on tape. it is a huge relief and has been a long time coming. i have been working on this album for the past year and 2 months, from writing, to recording, to mastering. i didn't get all of the things i wanted but i think everything will turn our rather nicely. lastly, there are 2 new songs on the myspace page." familiar strangers," which was one of the last songs i finished, and "layover," the last track on the album. check them out. when the album comes out on may 4th, i will be posting the artwork, and track listings.

my vacation is finally over. i have my last day of work at t-mobile today. check one of the countdowns off the list. it's bittersweet though. i am going to miss the paychecks and some of my co-workers, but the job really wasn't for me, but i did learn a lot from the job. i learned i never want to do this as a career.

my brother ryan is graduating next month and since i didnt have a graduation party, we are combining the two and having our graduation party may 2nd at barfield park in murfreesboro, tennessee.

april 22nd, 2009: north carolina or bust

I thought I would do a quick update before I got on the road to go see steven, sandy and brody. I’ll be on the road for over 9 hours so its going to be a long drive for someone with nothing to think about…

In other news,  I’m 24 now. it hasn't really sunk in yet.

i hung out with matt and justin for a bit. then I hung out with some old friends who some I hadn’t seen since I moved to nashville a year ago. seth bought donuts and everyone sang happy birthday, it was nice.

happy birthday me and seth

also thanks to everyone who called and remembered my birthday.

my mom drove in from columbia last night and we had a proper birthday dinner with my dad.

In dolcim news, we are playing our europe tour kickoff show on saturday may 9th with tony danza. It should be a good show, so mark your calendars, because we leave for tour 4 days after that. a flyer will be posted soon. Also, I wanted to let americans know, you can order our vinyl l.p. from ryan’s distro, icfyc here

also, a special note:

i will be converting my page into a dolcim tour diary so that we can all keep everyone updated on what will be going on during the tour. this will include entries, pictures and tour updates as we travel through europe. this starts on may 13th.

In kafka news, my computer crashed, with all of my songs on it. it was just recently fixed. So I will hopefully be sending off the songs very soon... I am still finishing the artwork and waiting on a few things... 2 new songs will be on the page soon...

april 19th, 2009: death to my hometown

on april 10th, several tornadoes touched down in my hometown of murfreesboro and destroyed over 100 homes and killed 2 people. it made national news.

my phone wasn't working and i couldn't get ahold of anyone to see if they were okay. i was trying to get ahold of my friend mike because i found out a tornado touched down near where he lives. it took me 45 minutes of detours and getting turned away to get to his house. while on the way there, i encountered this:

when i finally turned onto his street, this is what i saw:

the tornado literally circled his house destroying all of the trees and then demolished the house right next to his. it also took out the power lines, leaving his entire neighborhood without electricity, and right before the weekend. mike's dad will be using some of my pictures for his insurance company.

we walked to the house and went inside making sure no one was in there.

while on my way to work the next morning, i passed through regency park, and went down the street to where my dad used to live. i saw this:

the tornadoes were rated as EF 4's with 166-200 mph winds.

insane.

so i am officially moved back to murfreesboro, even though i am still working 40 hours a week in nashville. it took both my days off from work to finish moving and now my stuff is everywhere. now i am back at work and don't know when i will be able to get things situated. i took a picture with my roommate chris before i left.

roommates
this pose is supposed to show off our muscles? thanks chris.

in other news, i put my 2 weeks notice in at my job last wednesday. i have added something new to the countdown.

and the countdowns continue...

april 9th, 2009: we can be happy underground

I usually don’t update this often, but I felt compelled to.

In dolcim news, the guillotine ride vinyl lp’s are here!!!!

lp's! inserts!

a limited quantity is available on the sleepinghouse records page for order.

cementing the seams has written a review of the record. you can read it here:

in music related news...april 7th was a fun day. I got off work early, and then kaylie and mike came up to nashville for the ben folds show.
mike and I both got into ben folds (five) back in elementary school, i'd say around 5th grade, and kaylie has been a long time fan as well. This would make my 4th time seeing ben, with mike and erin the first time at uptown mix years ago, then with steven, seth and erin at a free personal show at vanderbilt, then with kaylie at the sommet center several years ago.
we all met at my apartment and listened to the new album way to normal.

bft

then we went and and ate at ru sans, with each of us getting our respective delicious vegetarian sushi. i got teriyaki eggplant and sweet potato, kaylie got maki vegetable, and mike got cranberry, which was bold.

after that we went looking for parking spots, which proved to be quite difficult, but we finally found one. As we entered the ryman and found our seats, there was quite a lot of commotion and we were unsure if any of the bands had played.
they had. ben folds, jared and sam and 2 friends walked out on the stage and opened up with "bitch went nuts" off of the new album way to normal. then, it apparently was this guy's birthday, so he yelled out "sing happy birthday." ben's reaction to this turned into one of the best impromptu improv jams i have ever been a witness too, and only the 2nd song of the set! ben has been known to make up songs before but this was brilliant. as they jammed, ben made up the words singing "happy birthday motherfucker" throughout. he ended the song saying " i hope this is the greatest day of your life" and i dont doubt that for that guy it was. lucky bastard. Throughout the set he played a few new songs and then just old songs. I noticed at one point that there were actually 5 people on the stage, making for would have been a complete “ben folds (five)” interestingly enough.

ben and sam ben

Halfway through the set, the other members left the stage and it was just ben for several songs. he told a few stories, like when he lived near belmont blvd (where I currently live now) in the early 90’s. the other musicians got back on the stage and he played "narcolepsy" off of unauthorized biography of reihnold messner, a song I had never seen live. Then he played “landed,” one of my favorite and most nostalgic songs. i called her. the songs went on into the night as he had the audience sing in different sections for “not the same.” Then he played some more new songs off of his new e.p. stems and seeds.

Ater this he played “rockin' the suburbs,”“army,” and “zak and sara.” They walked off the stage and kaylie, mike and I got out of our seats and walked up the aisle to get closer to the stage. we knew their would be an encore. kaylie was hoping they would play “kate.” as the crowd roared, they all came back on the stage for a few more songs. they played “underground” which he played last time I saw him at the sommet center. during my favorite part of the song, “I’m sure you don’t remember me…” I yelled out “who the fuck are you!?” which is a direct reference off of naked baby photos. He then played “fair” off of whatever and ever amen.  they ended the night with "kate" and I turned around and saw how ecstatic kaylie was. it was perfect.

after that we stood in line to get a shirt, but the guy in front of us got the last medium which bummed mike out. they had smalls so I got a shirt. After that we walked the streets of nashville to my car and drove back to my apartment. mike and kaylie had school the next day, so they headed back to murfreesboro. all in all it was a really good night

in other news, in an attempt to save money before tour, I am moving out of my apartment in west end next week. it's going to be weird.

i did a huge update on the sleepinghouse records page. i had some people asking questions about how to order records off of the website so that issue is resolved on the releases page.

In other other news, let the countdowns begin:

-my 24th birthday is on the 20th...11 days away

-i’m going to north carolina to see the smalleys and mogwai in 13 days

april 3rd, 2009: naked baby photos

On march 14th at 2:53 p.m. brody james smalley came into the world weighing in at 8 pounds 5 ounces and 20.5 inches tall.

brody james smalley
he’s a cute little bugger. congratulations steven and sandy.

I talked to steven for a good while the day he was born. he told me and i quote: "sean, never have a baby, it’s too intense." haha. i can't wait to see the smalley family at the end of this month.

exciting news! I got my international drivers license this week.
im now officially licensed to drive in europe!

international driver's license

that's right. i will be driving on the left side of the road through england up to scotland, through the alps into italy, and all of the other countries we are traveling to. I wanted to drive last tour but couldn’t. the van is a stick, and justin doesn’t know how to drive one, so we will be teaching him in the next few weeks. it's been a while since i taught someone how to drive a stick so it should be fun.

In dolcim news, we played 2 shows last month, our first shows in 8 months! the guys from sweden in suis la lune and army of kashyyyk from baltimore were all really cool guys. I showed them around nashville a little bit before the show and we ate at international market down the street from where I live. the shows went well and they stayed at my apartment that night.

Oli Sanders of the UK based Collective Zine wrote a review of our full-length.
You can read it here:

I am also working on our t-shirt design right now, so I will post the graphic when it's finished. Also, we are waiting for our copies of the vinyl L.P., they should be arriving this week.

In kafka news, there is a ton:
After intensely working and reworking the songs over the past month, I finally finished mastering all of the tracks .
The upcoming full-length is entitled “content to drift” and is scheduled to be released on tape may 4th, 2009 on sleepinghouse records, about a week before I leave for tour.
I will be taking a number of copies with me on tour to sell at the shows.
I updated the myspace page for the first time in 2 months. i put 4 new mastered songs. these include: "hindsight," "moniker," "seashells," and "laundry." go check them out and don’t forget to use headphones
now that the songs are finished, I will be doing some volume tweaking and then I will send them off to be put on tape soon. I am also finishing up the artwork.
the open water records tape compilation will be coming out at the end of april.
2 new songs will be appearing on the page later this month so stay tuned.

In other news, my mom got a job, but couldn’t find her keys for 2 days so she lost it. I thought I had bad luck. She called me on st. patrick’s day and told me that she was on her way to bartending school in nashville. Yeah, bartending school. Crazy. My mom, at 55 has now resorted to training to be behind a bar. she has been staying at a hotel in donelson, so lately I have been going skating at the concrete park and then hanging out with her.

I watched the criterion collection chungking express on bluray with ryan lewis the other day. it's one of the only 4 movies criterion has released on bluray, crazy. but I have to say, I love the original better, with all of the scratches on the film. plus, on the new one, the subtitles are different, including my favorite quote of the whole film.

I am currently watching shinobi yaguchi’s "adrenaline drive"

ben folds at the ryman is 4 days away!

march 13th, 2009: in the world of time, things can never go back to the way they were

i would have just gotten back from japan this month, after living there for 6 months. crazy how things work and don't work out.

It's been over a month since I have been on here. my apologies, but i have my reasons. I’ll try to remember everything that has happened.

main reason: I haven’t had internet for over 2 weeks now. there is a guy who lives on the 1st floor of my apartment who has a one-eyed dog named griffin. I pay him about 10 bucks a month to use his wireless internet, which doesn’t work that great on the 3rd floor, but still. anyway, he moved to Chicago a few weeks ago so now I don’t have internet anymore.

as you may have noticed, i made some changes to the page. i added the archives section to the toolbar, and added everything from 2008 on there. i'm trying to get everything organized better. the short stories section is now called "words" and i will be including papers and some new content on there in the near future.

I’ve been working like crazy. they have been offering overtime at work, so the past 2 nights I worked 12-12 shifts, totaling 24 hours of work in 2 days. overtime = time and ½ which is good money. I’ve also been trading shifts with people so I can have saturday off. I’ve been working until midnight most nights, which sucks. i think i worked 52 hours last week.

It snowed last week. then after that, it got really warm. I've been skateboarding nonstop this past week, almost every night at the concrete park. it's gotten cold again and rainy the past few days. I was filming the nashville skyline the other night, and it looked like this.

nashville snow nashville rain

I bought tickets to see ben folds on april 7th at the ryman. it's going to be epic. I got kaylie and mike tickets so they could come which will be really nice, as we have been to ben shows together before. i saw oasis at the ryman and it was amazing. its been a while since I have seen benny boy, even though he lives close to my neighborhood.

everyone has been having birthdays lately. justin turned 28 february 28th, matt turned 28 march 5th, mike turned 23 march 11th, and taylor turned 20 march 13th.

I just got off the phone with steven, and it appears that brody could be born sometime tonight or tomorrow morning. they were originally expecting him around march 3rd. sandy was having contractions yesterday, which is a good sign, they are going for the most natural birth possible. its insane though, my best friend is about to be a father. I've had my phone on me all day waiting for "the call."
In related news, I will be driving to north carolina to visit the smalleys and brody at the end of april, and… we are going to see MOGWAI!!!! the last time steven and I saw mogwai was back in 2006 in nashville. They are one of my favourite bands, and I am really excited. I just bought their new album "the hawk is howling" about a month ago and it’s a return to their earlier sound. the sun smells too loud is my favourite track right now.

in kafka news: Ive been working on the songs for the full-length nonstop:

working on full length

this is my workspace. I just got a program that has mastering software so I am about to start mastering all of the songs. It’s been an intense and time consuming process.
The kafka on the shore song “footnote” will be on an open water records tennessee tape compilation coming out in april. there will be new songs on the page soon so stay tuned!

In dolcim news, the full length "guillotine ride" had its official european vinyl release saturday march 7th! taken directly from the react with protest page:

We also have 2 shows this month:

march 20th show march 23rd show

Monday March 23rd with clinging to the trees of a forest fire (Denver) sacaea, and O'sullivan Harvestor of Death 1863 at The Warehouse 1318 Little Hamilton Nashville, TN 37203

In other news, the economy is shite as we all know. steven's dad lost his job. and my mom had to resign from her job last week, due to allegations at the elementary school where she was inappropriately reassigned to after being demoted. she hadn’t been in a classroom setting in 27 years. she was 2 years shy of retiring with 30 years of teaching. It’s all bullshit. She is also not receiving backpay for the last 4 months.  Now she is out of money, and has applied for food stamps.  she is interviewing for jobs that she is overqualified for. She did just buy a car though, so the truck is back! I can’t wait to drive it again, it’s been almost a year.

i guess that's all for now. there will be some more new stuff added to the page soon and it should be loading a lot better now, apparently i'm a moron when it comes to webpage design.

i’m currently watching wong kar wai’s "days of being wild."

tour is exactly 2 months away....

this past weekend I went to the premiere of the new skate video, Alien Workshop’s "Mind Field." It was awesome. There were over a hundred people there and the video was really good, and had a great soundtrack. afterwards, we all skated in the same room.

mind field skate sesh

since I have graduated I have found myself having some more free time, with which at first I did not know what to do with. after about 2 months of adjusting, I am back in full swing and doing things i have been wanting to do. a lot of skateboarding, and more recently cinematography. I went back and made some changes to an old short of mine called “the roommate.” I will hopefully be premiering it soon. I have also picked back up on some older video projects and started some new ones including timelapses. stay tuned…

in bad news, I have found myself sick again. I started to lose my voice last week and then woke up friday morning, having trouble breathing and unable to speak. I went to work, and after about an hour of taking calls, I had to leave. You can’t work at a call center without your voice. I went to the doctor and they told me I have laryngitis and an ear infection. awesome i told her. It’s a virus and they told me they couldn’t really do much but let it run its course. Im just glad I have insurance. I went home and slept for 6 hours straight. My voice is slowly coming back. It’s interesting. Instead of talking, I feel like I’m yelling just to get words out, it strains my voice so much, it’s exhausting.

I started my new work schedule, 12 pm-8:30 Saturday-Wednesday. I got the short end of the stick on the re-alignment however. My old schedule was Tuesday through Saturday, so I did the math, I worked 9 days straight, almost an 80 hour work week. Damn. I feel like that is all I do these days. this is my first day off in almost 10 days.

i went to downtown to "the arcade" this past saturday night, where each month they have openings of all the new art galleries. i had been before, but it's been awhle. it was pretty fun. i meandered my way through each gallery, sipping wine all the while. there was some really good stuff by a french painter, and some interesting video art stuff. one of the installations i enjoyed, while the other i didn't. either way, i had 9 cups of free wine and various snacks so i left in a better mood than i arrived.

we have been having some really nice weather this past week, very warm. it's all i really talk about while on the phones. i hope it continues to stay this way as it makes me feel better about life.

well that’s all for now.

february 4th, 2009: it only figures that i ride my bike into wet cement

so it’s february already, about time for an update. the first day of february was beautiful. clear skies, sunny, warm. i couldn’t have asked for a better way to start off the month. and on this sunny day, i was at my dad's house and just recently bought the missing pieces for my drums. since it was so nice outside, i set my drum set up in the front yard. it had been about a year since i played. my sister took a picture as the sun went down.

drums in yard

but the groundhog saw its shadow, which is quite depressing, considering 6 more weeks of winter.

at work the cooks now call me "vegetable man." i don't really mind. i got them to start importing blackbean soy burgers and cooking other vegetarian options. the woman at the check out counter, who also calls me "vegetable man " said that I have inspired her and she is now starting a meatless diet. i told her how healthy it was and she said she felt better too. a little bit at a time. i start my new schedule next sunday, im glad too. getting up every morning at 6 a.m. has run its course.

i‘ve been going to a lot of galleries lately. first, I went to the harmony korine pigxote photo gallery at vanderbilt. It was one of the most disappointing galleries i've ever seen, a waste of time actually. harmony went to tokyo and took pictures of girls on television. not only is it easily replicable, it’s stupid to go to japan and watch tv. oh well, at least it was free.

i also went to the frist, which has a new show called "paint with flesh." It was quite interesting, julian schnabel’s works with broken plates and paint on canvas were nice, and I ending up staring at picasso's stroke patterns for a good while.

i saw charlie kaufman’s new film, Synedoche, N. Y. which he wrote and directed. It was extremely dense, containing elements of eternal sunshine, adaptation, and being john malkovich within it. I felt older and more mature after leaving the theater, similar to how i felt after watching eternal sunshine.

i've been graduated for almost 2 months now. its so weird, everyone I know is in school and I am not. 17 some odd years of schooling and now nothing. It’s a very strange feeling, almost like dropping out.

i have been eating a lot of peanut butter lately, I think im trying to get salmonella.

i've also been going to a lot of shows lately. los campasino’s (bottom left) from Cardiff, England played recently at exit in. then sanctions (bottom right) played in a warehouse last saturday night. roy is now playing 2nd guitar with them.

in video news: I have added a documentary of cease upon the capitol I shot back in 2005 before I joined the band. It’s about recording the full-length at battle tapes, and has footage of practice and a live show. It’s interesting to watch 3 years later, go check it out.

in kafka news, I recently finished a song that I have been working on for almost a year, not consecutively but still. it's called hindsight. I am also working on a new song that will be on the next record. speaking of records, the 4 song e.p. "killing time and injuring eternity" is now finished. it is available on sleepinghouse records.

that's all for now, exciting news coming very soon...

january 22nd, 2008: johannes takes over nashville! pictures and stories

i dropped off johannes at the airport yesterday morning so he could fly back to boston. he was here for a whole week with me. it was sad to see him go, i got used to him being here and we had a lot of fun. go check out his blog, and check out his band: grave, shove, let's go!

here is a recap of the past week with pictures! it might take a while to load...

after i picked johannes from the airport last wednesday night, we hung out and caught up. i took the day off work for the next day. it was 7 degrees fahrenheit outside so we went to the frist. there is a george weston photography and film gallery going on. it was really good and definitely worth checking out. it started with daguerrotypes and covered edward muybridge, experimental photography with flash motion, including the bullet through the apple, and world war II through the landing on the moon.

after that i took him to opryland, (pictures below) and we went by where i used to work and got some gelato. i then took him to the skatepark and did some skateboarding. after that we went to a show at mercy lounge. i had to work friday and saturday, but we were still able to hang out and do some exploring. i took him to an indian vegetarian restaurant called the woodlands which is very good

saturday night we came to murfreesboro to hang out with matt and justin and I showed him where I grew up. we went by my dad's house on sunday and he met my family which was nice. we now both know our parents and the towns we grew up in. a year after i met his family he met mine.

i took him to the square (pictured below) then we ate falafel's (which i hadn't had since i was in malmo, sweden) and johannes came to dolcim practice. after that we said our goodbyes (pictures below) and headed back to nashville. our stay in murfreesboro was short but to the point.

hanging out with my dad

sebastian!

we went shopping at kroger, a southern staple, and trader joes. johannes is vegan, so i ate vegan for a whole week. it was very different and i liked it a lot, so i am thinking about it for the future. we talked to his brother sebastian, (above right) of june paik through skype. i hadn't talked to him in a long time. he is at medical school in hungary right now. i can't wait to see him this summer.

on monday, my day off, we were very productive. it was the "tourist" day and I was the tour guide. I took him to the parthenon, (pictures below) and then we went to fort "fagley." we both learned about this fort and tennessee history, especially the civil war. after that, i took him to my favorite place in nashville, where you can see the entire city (picture below). as if that wasn't enough, we then went to the country music hall of fame! we didn't go into the actual museum, but he bought some nashville tourist stuff. oh country music.

then i took him downtown to the riverfront (pictured below). later that night, johannes, my roommate chris, and i went and ate sushi with ryan lewis. after hanging out and talking through the night, i had to go to bed so i could get up early for work. bummer. but it was good hanging out with ryan, and johannes hadn't seen him since the cease tour june-july 2007 when we he drove back the van back to dresden.

tuesday, i got off work an hour early and we went to the tennessee state museum downtown. i hadn't been there since elementary school. johannes loved learning about tennessee history and it was good for me to refresh my memory as well.

shuffleboard
foobar in east nashville

after that, we went out to some really country bars, and saw some country rockabilly bands (playing johnny cash covers) so he could have the real "nashville" experience (said in an extremely southern accent). We ended off his last night in town by going to east nashville to foobar, a real redneck bar. i taught him to play shuffleboard (pictured above) and my east nashville friends, jeremy, justin, and jamison all came to hang out. all in all, we had a good time, and i after show him around, i like nashville more and have a better appreciation of this city.

so come back anytime johannes, and don't forget the LOLS.

the end

that's all for now...

i'm working on some new material, so kafka songs coming soon...

january 20th: 2009: HISTORY IS MADE: OBAMA is the 44th President!

today will go down in the history books. obama is inagaurated as the first african american president of the united states. i was able to witness it, but i was at work. i had to be at work this morning by 7. I took calls all morning and watched CNN as everyone gathered around the white house to watch. while working on customer's account, i watched as obama gave his speech as he was inducted as the 44th president. i felt very good about it. i even wore my obama shirt today. i have never been much for politics, but after 8 years i think everyone was tired and ready for change. as obama made his speech, he spoke with confidence and intelligence. i am excited for what is to come and for the first time in a long time pleased with the head of our country.

i got off work early, the call volume due to inagauration was very low. so im taking johannes to the tennessee state museum so he can learn about the history of tennessee.

sadly, i have to take johannes to the airport tomorrow morning because he is flying back to boston. so this is johannes's last night in town.

pictures...stories...

STAY TUNED...

january 19th: 2009: JOHANNES IS HERE!!!!!!!!!!

i picked up johannes from the airport wednesday night. he flew in from los angeles, and before that he was in italy, and before that back home in germany. he has been traveling non-stop. it's been over a year since we saw each other last. this is also his first time in tennessee! it's snowing really hard outside right now. it's kind of pretty. i'm taking him around to get the nashville experience.

one day until obama is inagaurated!!!

january 12th, 2009: heavily medicated: all i know is that i don't know

happy late new year. these past few weeks have been a blur. it's amazing how much you think you know about yourself. i'm so wrong i'm right.

I woke up this morning to president bush making his 47th and final speech. he reflected over the past 8 years and acknowledged his mistakes, but failed however to take responsibility for them. 8 days until history will be made and this country will be headed in the right direction. it's crazy to think how long i have been counting down until this day and now it's less than a week away.

i’ve been really sick this past week. work and sleep have consumed my life.
heavily medicated is the best way to decribe my current state. it’s been awful. I still don’t have my senses of taste and smell. food has never been so boring.

I am picking up johannes from the airport in 2 days. while skating back from getting him a key made, i witnessed a car wreck happen right in front of me. im beginning to think i'm bad luck.

In dolcim news, the album is finally completely finished. We finished mastering it last thursday night and celebrated. we’re sending the album and the artwork off today. it will be pressed on vinyl and released in march or april.

In kafka news, after 6 months of inactivity, I have finally logged into and updated the myspace page. I added 2 new songs, " seashells,"and "laundry."
check it out. more to come soon.

i leave you with this:

my feet carried me down the road, which was illuminated by the oddly unreal light of the moon, and into the woods. beneath that moonlight, all sounds bore a strange reverberation. the hollow sound of my own footsteps seemed to come from another direction as if I were hearing someone walking on the bottom of the sea, behind me, every now and then I would her a crack or rustle a heavy pall hung over the forest, as if the animals of the night were holding their breath, waiting for me to pass. -murakami
